Lovisa Maria Hjelm was born Nov 11, 1754 at Karlskrona, the naval center in the Southwest of Sweden. She was a daughter of the Amirality accountant Johan Peter Hjelm and his wife Helena Margareta Myrtin. In 1760, Johan Peter Hjelm started the fire company of Karlskrona, but he lost his fortune when the town burned in 1790.
When sixteen years old, Lovisa Maria was married June 14, 1771 to the Amirality vicar Elias Billberg (1745-1785). Three years later, Elias Billberg became vicar of Bunkeflo, south of Malmö, where he died 40 years old, in 1785. During the fourteen years of marriage, they had twelve children, of which five died as infants.
After the death of her husband, Lovisa Maria moved back to her parents at Karlskrona. Two years later, there was a fire and the family lost house and fortune. By the end of 1791, Lovisa Maria was married to the Amirality accountant Carl Johan Schlyter. In this second marriage, which also lasted for fourteen years, they had two children.
After her mother’s death in 1818, she moved to Lund, where her oldest daughter was married to the bishop. Lovisa Maria died July 27, 1850, almost 96 years old. On her tombstone at the Cementary of Sankt Peters Kloster is written ”Mother of 14 children, 69 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild”.
